Vitamins for the Rescue Pony ~ Eggsy samples Spillers Daily Balancer

If you've been following Eggsy's journey since abandonment you'll know one thing for sure about him ~ he loves his food!

Eggsy's diet is mainly foraged based with ad-lib haylage plus his daily hard feeds but the thing with hay and haylage is that the mineral content is only as good as the soil it is grown in. If the soil is deficient in certain minerals the forage will also be deficient and as we all know the correct balance of vitamins and minerals are essential for good health.

With this in mind we were pretty pleased when we were contacted on behalf of Spillers to see if we would be interested in trying Eggsy on one of their balancers, a sort of horsey multi vitamin / mineral supplement. Of course we said, "Yes please!"

Firstly, we had a conversation with one of Spillers in house nutritionists about Eggsy and what he was being fed. It was decided that 200grams of Spillers Daily Balancer would ensure that Eggsy was getting the essential nutrients that might possibly be missing from his forage. A few days later we took delivery of a bag of the balancer plus a bag of Spillers Happy Hoof to mix it with.

Spillers Daily Balancer is designed to balance the nutrients that are often low in pasture, hay and haylage. It contains a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, plus additional biotin for hoof health. It's the equine equivalent of human vitamin and mineral supplements, and because it doesn't cause weight gain it was to be fed in addition to Eggsy's usual meals mixed with a couple of handfuls of the Happy Hoof.

As you can all imagine, Eggsy was delighted to be getting this additional feed, his only disappointment being that 200grams + a couple of handfuls of Happy Hoof isn't very much. He would have far preferred more!

And of course we were equally delighted knowing that Eggsy was receiving all the essential nutrients he needs for his health. Thank you Spillers for providing Eggsy with his vits!

What to do with Eggsy ~ the plan

It's been 19 months now since Eggsy was abandoned as a foal, chucked away by heartless owners, left to starve. 19 months since we started a GoFundMe to help with his keep as we just could not afford anymore equines but nobody else would give him a life.

Horses, ponies, equines they're a long term commitment.

So where do we go from here?

Well over the next few years, yes YEARS, Eggsy has lots of lessons to learn properly:

How to lead

To behave when tied up

To be a good boy for the farrier & for us when we pick out his feet

Patience whilst being groomed etc

How to load & unload into a horsebox / trailer

To be well behaved whilst having a bath

He also needs to have lots of adventures, to see new things, get used to crowds, new horses, traffic.

We'll be doing all of these things with him over the next few years and then when he is 4 years old he will be backed, very lightly then turned away until his 5 when he will begin his lessons as a ridden pony.

So that's the plan, Eggsy's school curriculum, nothing is written in stone, there is no forced schedule, he will be taught all he needs to know as and when he is both physically and mentally developed enough to learn.

Oh and somewhere along the line he will be gelded, we don't want anymore Gypsy stallions adding to the UK equine crisis.

Horses, ponies, equines they're a long term commitment!
