A milestone for Eggsy's Help raise abandoned foal GoFundMe

We're absolutely delighted to report that Eggsy's GoFundMe has reached £1000 thanks to additional donations from Norfolk Bea, Danielle & an anonymous donation.

That's 56% of the target raised in 4 months by 36 people!

Thanks to all of you Eggsy has gone from this poor little scrap of an abandoned foal

to this fine young chap

He's legal now having been microchipped & passported,
the cost of his gelding is covered when he is ready for the op.
So now we just need to get him through the winter with plenty of this

haylage

which we all know Eggsy pony is very keen on!

He's due to be wormed again in early December and of course there are regular visits from the farrier.

A few months ago I was pretty much in despair as to how I could possible afford to keep this little chap who had been so badly used by fickle humans. No one was interested in re-homing him because of his locking stifles and I was actually advised to have him put down because, wait for this, "He's unsaleable".  But now because of each and every one of you who has helped spread his story and donated to his care Eggsy is thriving.

Don't ever forget, because we won't, it is through your generosity that Eggsy has a life,

Eggsy the abandoned foal and the green rug ~ a lesson in trust

Back in September we showed you the wonderful fleecy rugs gifted to Eggsy by Eleonore of Marburger Pferdchen with the promise of a post about the green pullover rug. Well here it is!

Having willingly modeled his new blue fleece rug for us Eggsy was reluctant to play dressing up again and took off to hide amongst the trees.

We gave him plenty time to examine this new article of clothing which would need to be pulled over his head, something our little chap had never experienced before.

And then very carefully the rug was placed on Eggsy

and slowly pulled around his ears

over his face

and around his neck.

Here he is checking it out

and once he realized that he could walk around as usual

Eggsy was quite happy to model his new green pullover rug for the photographs and

show off the innovative roll neck design that will keep him warm and snuggly on the coldest of days. Once again Eleonore thank you so much for your kindness.

Canter with Santa to raise funds for abandoned and orphaned foals

The TwitterHerd, a group of horse enthusiasts who take part in chats on Twitter in the evening have got together with Equestrian Hoodies to raise money for rescue equines this Christmas.

Both the Come Canter with Santa jumper or hoodie pages on Equestrian Hoodies website have a link to a Just Giving page to raise £400 for rescue equines, to be divided equally between Eggsy and Bodmin Moorland Pony Rehabilitation a non profit horse rescue that is often asked to take in foals orphaned by road traffic accidents on the moor.

So if you're in the market for a Christmas sweater this year either for yourself or as a gift you might like to consider Equestrian Hoodies Come canter with Santa range and maybe make a donation too.

Of course if you prefer you can go straight to the Just Giving page and make a donation, no purchase necessary !

Eggsy's own GoFundMe remains open.

Remember the horses

The British Army used 1.2 million horses and mules in World War 1, it's believed that 484,000 died in battle, most never returned to the land of their birth with many of the survivors being sold off for meat or a life of hard labour.

Don't ever forget that.

"Wherever man has left his footprints in the long ascent from barbarism to civilization,
we find the hoofprint of a horse beside it."

First tetanus booster for abandoned foal Eggsy

Just to let everyone know Eggsy had his tetanus booster six weeks after the first vaccination, he was a very good boy for the vet and didn't even flinch.

So that's it for vaccinations until next year when he will require another tetanus shot.

For now Eggsy doesn't need the equine flu vaccination as he and his companions don't come into contact with other equines who could possibly infect them with the virus. Should that situation change eg. if we decided to take Eggsy to a show sometime in the future then he would require the flu vac as well.

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to Eggsy's care, we wouldn't have got this far without you all.

Eggsy's new rugs

Here's Eggsy admiring his new fleecy rug handmade especially for him by Eleonore of  Marburger Pferdchen (pferdchen means little horse)

he can't quite make up his mind which he prefers, the blue or the green !

We think he looks darling in both and the workmanship is superb, just look at the detail Eleonore has put into these rugs

Gorgeous fabrics
and

even Eggsy's Twitter address embroidered for all to see and follow him.

These fleecy rugs are going to help keep Eggsy warm and snug throughout this winter, thank you so much for your kindness Eleonore.

(Watch out for another blog post about the green rug, there's something quite special about it.)

The thing about Tetanus in equines

The thing about tetanus in equines is that it is impossible to avoid the bacterium that causes the disease, Clostridium Tetani lives in the soil. You might not even realise your horse has been infected until it is too late, the bacterium can enter through a puncture wound so tiny you never see it and 90% of horses that develop tetanus die.

The good news is that a simple, relatively inexpensive vaccination will protect your horse from developing the disease.

Eggsy has now had his first vaccination against tetanus, paid for with donations from his GoFundMe, he will require another in 4 -6 weeks time followed by a booster 365 days later. Many thanks to all those who have made this possible through your kindness in donating to Eggsy's care.

How's Eggsy the abandoned colt?

Eggsy was found, abandoned, earlier this year, dehydrated, starving and covered in lice. During the two months he has been in our care he has gone from this

sad, undernourished colt to

this healthy looking chap.

The painful sores have healed and the lice have been eradicated.

Eggsy gains confidence daily, his social skills have increased in leaps and bounds
going from a foal frightened by other equines to one

confident enough to share haylage in close proximity with a horse much bigger than himself.

He has seen the farrier, taken wormer and

learned to wear a rug, all for the first time.

Eggsy's still suffers from locking stifles but they too seem to have improved a little and we're hoping that given time and care he will be one of the 80% of foals who grow out of this condition.

We are really pleased with the improvement in Eggsy, none of which could have been achieved without the financial assistance from those who have kindly donated to |Eggsy's GoFundMe campaign to whom we are eternally grateful.

What sort of person abandons a foal?

When people hear that Eggsy was abandoned at only 7 months old they often automatically assume that he was abandoned by the breeder, not so. Eggsy was sold as a weanling at 6 months of age.

One then imagines that the foal might have been sold in a pub for a few quid on a Saturday night and that the morning after the night before the purchaser realized they had made a dreadful mistake. No, the person who purchased Eggsy chose him before he was weaned, paying for him in installments over a number of weeks before taking delivery of their new equine.

So now you might be thinking that the new owner had no experience with horses and didn't know what to do with him. No, the person who abandoned Eggsy was in their 50s and had owned ponies since their teens, in fact they had 4 other equines who went with them when they moved.

Why did they abandon him? I have no real answer, why anyone would purchase a foal only to dump it a few weeks later is really beyond my comprehension, though one does wonder if they heartlessly sentenced him to a possible long and lingering death by starvation due to his locking stifles.

Will you help Eggsy?

What's all this about microchipping then Eggsy? Microchipping abandoned equines

Microchips are a small implant, about the size of a grain of rice, that contain a unique serial code. They are implanted into the ligament on the left side of the horses neck , via an injection by a veterinary surgeon.
The microchips unique serial code can be read using an electronic microchip reader. The code along with the owner's details are stored on a computerised data base.
Since the 2005  introduction of compulsory passports for horses another European Union regulation came into effect on 1st July 2009 which states that all foals must be microchipped before an owner can apply for an equine passport. Any foal born after 1st July 2009 must be microchipped within 6 months of birth or before 31st December of the year of birth or the owner will face a possible fine.

This means that Eggsy will have to be microchipped by the end of the year, not a problem now due to the generous donations but not all abandoned equines are so lucky.

Under Section 7B and 7C of the Animals Act 1971, as introduced by the Control of Horses Act 2015  if an abandoned horse is not claimed ownership passes to the person detaining the equine, who may then retain ownership, or see that they are re-homed, sold or humanely destroyed. Which means that whoever has had the equine dumped on them then becomes legally responsible for microchipping & passporting before said equine can be sold or risk a fine of up to £5,000. At a cost of around £100 it becomes economically unviable, leading to the majority of abandoned equines being destroyed.

Eggsy's microchipping and passporting fees are covered now but he still has lots of other expenses, would you like to help support Eggsy?

Eggsy the abandoned foal wears a rug for the first time

The Great British weather tipped it down at the weekend so when Eggsy started to shiver we started searching through the rugs for one that might fit. Luckily we'd kept a couple of foal rugs from some time ago and although not in perfect condition they were fit for wear.

Eggsy wasn't too keen on the idea of wearing a rug and had to be bribed with copious amounts of carrots to stand still long enough to get one fitted.

But, it didn't take him long to begin to appreciate his "raincoat" and he soon found that all foal duties could be performed whilst wearing a rug. Duties like eating his dinner!

By morning he was an old hand at rug wearing.
