De-worming the abandoned foal ~ winter worming against encysted small redworms

So today was worming day for Eggsy a very important winter de-wormer against encysted small redworms (small strongyles, cyathostomes) a major killer in abandoned foals.

An over burden of small red worm encysted larvae can cause damage to the intestinal wall resulting in an inability to absorb nutrients, diarrhoea and debilitation, when they emerge from their cysts they can also cause colic.

In their encysted state small red worms will not show up in a worm count also they are protected from most wormers by the cyst wall so during the winter all horses should be given either a single dose of a moxiddectin wormer or a 5 day course of fenbendazole.

Eggsy is being given the moxiddectin de-wormer Equest. As you can see he is very good about standing and taking the wormer not even requiring a head collar. We think he must like the taste!

Equest is one of the more expensive equine de-wormers retailing at around £10 -£12 if you'd like to sponsor Eggsy's de-wormer a donation can be made on his GoFundMe page.

Eggsy's locking stifles ~ an update

We've spoken about Eggsy's locking stiffles before  but we thought it was about time we did a little update on how he's doing.

When Eggsy was abandoned there were times when he would quite literally drag one or other of his hind legs along. It was horrible to see and in a way quite frightening, the video below although not of Eggsy shows what we're talking about here:

We found that Eggsy was always worse if he didn't move much so in an attempt to get him moving we would take the feed waggon through is paddock.

As you can see he was quite enthusiastic in his pursuit of hard feed ! And it was a fairly successful ploy because he quite quickly went from the awful dragging of his legs to this:

This video shows the action we're talking about, again it isn't a video of Eggsy but one that we found on YouTube:

Eggsy's stifles continue to lock like this when he stands still for any length of time but he is able to unlock them once he gets going.

We remain hopeful that Eggsy will eventually grow out of this condition so that he doesn't have to have surgery.
