Eggsy's Advent Calendar Day 5

Canter with Santa

Last year Eggsy was lucky to be one of the recipients of the Twitter Herd Christmas fundraiser for abandoned and orphaned foals  along with Bodmin Moorland Pony Rehabilitation

At the time Bodmin Moorland Pony Rehabilitation were a not for profit rescue but 2016 has been an amazing,  though incredibly hard year for them with the Bodmin Moor equine crisis, and, they are now a registered charity. So huge congratulations are due to Shelly and the rest of  Bodmin Moorland Pony Rehabilitation.

Another rescue who has achieved charitable status this year is Hertfordshire based Cecil's Horse Sanctuary, congratulations to Julie and her team of volunteers.

Cecil's Horse Scantuary
There are many small equine rescues operating out there working night and day to save the lives of abandoned, mistreated and neglected horses. If there is one near you please offer your support as a volunteer or fundraiser even a few hours would make a difference.

Eggsy's Advent Calendar Day 4

This Shakespeare Sunday, the second Sunday in Advent, Day 4 of Eggsy's Advent Calendar, we wish you all

"Health, peace and happiness"

A Shakespeare quote from Henry IV.

Shakespeare Sunday is a hashtag where people Tweet Shakespeare quotes, we sometimes join in with Eggsy's Twitter account @eggsypony often trying to highlight the plight of ponies such as Eggsy in the current UK equine crisis with Tweets like these:

The miserable have no other medicine, but only hope
Be their hope

"How far that little candle throws its beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world."

We hope that in some way it makes people think about the abandoned, starved and abused equines suffering throughout the UK and indeed the whole world.

Eggsy's Advent Calendar Day 2

"Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone"
                                                                      Charles M. Schulz

And that's exactly what you've done for Eggsy, not just at Christmas but throughout the year. Thank you.

Today, 2nd December also happens to be Eggsy's long time supporter Eleonore's birthday. Remember Eleonore made Eggsy those super fleecy rugs last year (if you'd like one for your own equine take a look at her website Marburger Pferdchen.)

Eleonore and her husband have since gone on to adopt not just one pony in need but two rescue ponies, Caitlin and Finn, who travelled all the way from Ireland to Germany to live with them.

They have also rescued ducks and sheep and given them a forever home, Emma the sheep is quite the little fundraiser herself!

Happy Birthday Eleonore

Fireworks and Horses

Animals are terrified of fireworks, they don't know that humans are celebrating, bangs, whooshs and the night sky lighting up can send them into sheer panic so extra care needs to be taken when there is a likelihood of fireworks near your horses.

Forewarned is forearmed so keep an eye out for firework displays in your area being advertised in the local press, on social media etc. Ask your neighbours if they are planning on having fireworks for GuyFawkes, New Year, July 4th etc. If you know in advance that there is going to be a firework display near your horses you can arrange to stay with them. It's always worth talking to the organisers of firework displays to make them aware that there are horses in the area and to ask them to make sure that the fireworks are set off in the opposite direction to the horses.

Generally it's best not to change your horse's routine as this can add to their stress. If your horse is stabled an extra thick bed banked around the edges can help to prevent injury and casting. Check carefully to make sure there is nothing they can injure themselves on.

If your horse is out at grass make sure that the fences and gates are in good repair, again check there is nothing in the field they could injure themselves on.

Plan a fire procedure. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged and in case of emergency your vet's telephone number.

If you know that your horse is very frightened of fireworks speak to your vet, they may advise sedation.

Also remember that at least third party insurance is advisable because if your horse does escape and cause damage the law states that you are accountable.
